How to create own Layout / Theme?

Hello folks, I would like to develop my own layout for my website. I am interested in my own structures (Areas, GlobalArea, …), my own (local) fonts, my own CSS etc. When I look at the documentation (Working with Themes), I feel completely overwhelmed. I’m actually quite familiar with PHP, HTML, CSS & Co, so I could quickly create a basic framework for my website, but the way it looks in the documentation, it’s a bigger task.
