This has bothered me for a while so here goes. When I was in retail sales and a customer wanted to pay me money, I did not add any friction to that transaction. Even a moment’s hesitation could allow the customer to change their mind. Close the deal. Strike while the iron’s hot. When I visit an add-on page in the marketplace, I am faced with an unnecessary impediment to a frictionless purchase. The words “$30 for 1 year of updates” makes no clear sense and when I finally figure out what I think it’s saying, that interpretation isn’t actually true. Those words imply the all I’m buying is ‘1 year of updates’ but that’s not true. I get the add-on to use forever PLUS I get 1 year of updates. The proper wording should be “$30 - includes 1 year of updates”. I’m not sure why someone thought the wording needed to be somewhat obscure or cute or whatever but during the time it takes someone to figure out what they’re actually buying, they can change their mind or get distracted or get pissed that it’s confusing or any number of things that adds unnecessary friction in the sales process. It is my opinion that sales are routinely being lost due to the odd wording.
@frz - this makes sense and should be an easy change to make. I don’t know if it will affect sales, but expect it will reduce support questions along the lines of “Just what am I buying?”
Sure.
Can’t say I’ve ever had anyone ask, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t confused people.
I am sure no one is spending time trying to be “obscure or cute,” but i do agree this simple word change is somewhat clearer.
I prefer the old system with the list of questions and answers between the author and customers, it was like a mini version of this forums. Sometimes it is very helpful to be able to go back and see what was discussed and the solutions.
Last night I received another PM asking “If i buy XXX, do i have to pay YY dollars every year?”
Pretty much anyone who is new to the marketplace asks this and a fair proportion of old hands who are new to the new marketplace and stop to read the wording ask.
Please give a clarification of the wording high priority. A potentially big improvement for many developers for a small change.
Developers are only aware of those who ask. It doesn’t count the customers ready to buy but believe it’s going to cost money every year so they walk away silently without bothering to ask anyone how it works. This might be negatively affecting the adoption of concrete overall if prospective CMS adoptees think every addon will cost them a yearly fee so they walk away entirely.
Honestly I too found it confusing, but just needed a plugin and moved forward. I agree with the suggested change.
So, no movement on this? Others seem to agree. It’s a 10-second fix.
Marketplace now reads: “$30 – includes 1 year of updates”
Thanks!
