However I notice that the “Buy Now” button often has the sub-heading ; “$ X for one year of updates”.
So, my question is;
What am I buying here? Do I pay my $25 and I “own” the theme for keeps? Or am I entering into a subscription where I have to pay $25/yr to keep my web site alive?
It is not clear on the Marketplace and the syntax changes from “Buy Now” to “You authorise annual payments” as I progress along the journey to payment. This worries me a great deal. I have zero problems paying for things outright, but I don’t want to become an income stream for someone else. I can’t afford it due to my own very low income.
Am I worrying needlessly and the “Buy Now” option is a one-off payment for all time?
You are still buying the theme for keeps, all it means is if you cancel your subscription you won’t receive any updates after that one year has elapsed, you will still be able to use your theme, it won’t disappear off your site or restrict access etc etc.
If at a later date, the developer releases an update you really want you can simply buy another years worth of updates, you don’t have to pay year in year out if you don’t want to.
But bear in mind that for developers to keep updating and producing new features a subscription really helps.
Hi,
Thank you for your helpful reply. That all sounds good. I don’t mind, and indeed want to, pay for ongoing developer’s time.
I just don’t want to be “locked in” to a recurring payment over which I have no control.
The change in language from “Buy Now” to “Subscribe” on the actual payment page made me nervous.
Thanks.
